3D Flow Phenomena in Cement-Based Materials Using X-Ray CT and Electrical Capacitance Tomography

In this presentation, we show experimental results of applying tomography to imaging 3D flow phenomena in cement-based materials. In particular, we focus on two modalities: X-ray computerized tomography (CT) and electrical capacitance tomography (ECT). Our studies with X-ray CT show that this modality can give us spatially accurate information on multiple flow and reaction phenomena in cement-based materials – including formation of a carbonated shell inside cement-paste where CO2 was injected, and propagation of moisture within fractured material. The studies with ECT, on the other hand, demonstrate that in applications where the high spatial resolution is not a necessity, electrical imaging provides a feasible, relatively low-cost alternative to radiation-based modalities, and allows not only qualitative visualization of 3D moisture flow but also enables quantifying certain moisture transport parameters of cement-based materials.
