The focus of the present work is to provide a comparison between the different linear and nonlinear assessment approaches, proposed by the Italian seismic code for existing reinforced concrete structures, in order to underline their advantages and disadvantages. Linear and nonlinear static and time history analyses are performed considering a school development composed by buildings built in different time periods and using two different structural typology: RC frames and precast concrete panels. Referring to the studied case, the application conditions as well as the results of the different assessment approaches are critically reviewed. In particular, the Italian seismic code does not give clear indications about the assessment rules of precast concrete panel structures. In this work the author suggests two types of verification in order to give a first answer to the assessment of this type of structures.
