Presented By: Heather Kirkvold, James Madison University
Description: This presentation specifically approaches curricular instruction of concrete durability topics in an undergraduate level course. The authors (themselves as early career instructional faculty at various institution types) draw on their own teaching experiences and share their experiences with the reader, who, we presume, is now undertaking the task of teaching concrete durability topics for the first time. We overview several pedagogical approaches of note, each rooted in active learning styles; and we provide modular examples on how those pedagogies might be realized within a variety of course types – a full semester- (or quarter-) long course, a module within a course, or as extra- (or co-) curricular experiences. This presentation aims to inspire the reader to adopt one or more of the approaches in their own teaching and encourage the reader to identify support mechanisms and avoid pitfalls. We invite the reader to share their own successes (and lessons learned) at engineering education conferences such that we all might advance further in our teaching practices geared toward educating the next generation of civil engineers.
