Behind the Scenes of Your Favorite Radio Show

If you like listening to the radio as you drive to work, you probably have a favorite show. While you can tune in whenever you want, it takes a lot of effort for your show's hosts and production team to put on each broadcast. Here's what happens behind the scenes of each day's show.

The Production Team Monitors All the Equipment

Each radio show relies on a lot of sound and broadcasting equipment to provide listeners with high-quality audio. Studios need microphones for all their speakers and RF power dividers to send their signals to multiple locations. They also need soundboards to keep track of how loudly a song is playing or a speaker is talking, especially if the show involves sound effects. As the show progresses, the audio team keeps track of all this equipment and makes adjustments so that the sound doesn't fail and feedback doesn't occur.

The Writing Team Creates the Script

Very few shows hit the air without at least the bare bones of a script. Even though radio show hosts are good speakers, it's hard to talk for long periods of time without some notes and reminders. For shows that center around the news, the writing team develops scripts that are word-for-word what the hosts should say so that they don't accidentally deliver misinformation.

The Public Relations Team Looks at Listener Feedback

If shows aren't very popular, they may be canceled by their studios. To avoid cancellation, each show's public relations team looks at listener reviews on its website and reads through comments on social media. PR members suggest changes in programming and scripting to the sound and writing teams, and they give the hosts new ideas for topics or guests.

Although the best radio shows sound effortless, they're actually the result of careful planning and strategizing.
