Description: As a result of the declining availability of fly ash, there has been increased interest in the use of ground bottom ash as a pozzolan in concrete, either as a separate material or as a component of harvested coal ash which typically contains both fly ash and bottom ash. Data are presented from a review of the literature and from a program of testing performed on a wide range of pozzolans. The results indicate that, if ground to a sufficient fineness, bottom ash can perform in a comparable manner to fly ash produced from the same coal source. Recently developed pozzolanicity tests indicate that ground bottom fly ash has acceptable chemical reactivity and testing in mortar and concrete show that the material can be used to achieve the same durability benefits as many natural pozzolans and fly ash; these benefits include increased resistance to chloride ingress, sulfate attack and alkali-silica reaction.
