Description: Spray Dryer Absorbers (SDA) used for Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) come in a variety of configurations. Depending on the collection and process flow, different types of solids are collected. The SDA material (SDAM) is generally a mix of fly ash and calcium-sulfur compounds. SDAM can range from materials essentially devoid of fly ash to one that is a mix of predominantly fly ash. SDAM differs from more traditional wet FGD gypsum, in that it contains primarily calcium sulfite instead of calcium sulfate, with calcium hydroxide and minor calcium carbonate also present. Most SDAM is disposed in landfills, and very little is used. The morphology and chemistry of these materials along with the relative amount of fly ash in the final product will affect its character and compatibility with Portland concrete in previously unknown ways. There has been little development of the use of SDAM in concrete and other cementitious products. The scope of the research, funded by the Electric Power Research Institute, included both fundamental studies of the parent material and its interaction with Portland cement and applied research on mortar and concrete using standard ASTM procedures. Tests indicate potential for the use of SDAM in Portland cement for developing low-carbon concrete.
