Lateral-torsional buckling occurs when the compression region of a flexural member loaded about its major principal axis buckles laterally while the tension region works to stabilize the member resulting in lateral deflection and twist of the member. Lateral-torsional buckling will be described and investigated using the AISC beam strength curve for wide flange shapes. Additional considerations including load conditions, end conditions, and warping restraint will also be discussed.
