Since the start of unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng earlier this month there has been rising concern about food availability and food access, which is warranted, but fortunately the South African staples are produced in other provinces. Agricultural Business Chamber (Agbiz) chief economist Wandile Sihlobo and research head Sifiso Ntombela explain in a blog post that the public fear surrounding food security is understandable, given the vandalism that destroyed some food distribution centres, retailers and some farmlands, coupled with blockages in key logistics corridors.
